OPPAMA, Japan – Nissan celebrated the electric vehicle's second birthday in Japan with a gathering of more than 200 LEAF owners at GranDrive last weekend.

LEAF owner Masahiko Yoshida joined participants at the gathering, which also included EV enthusiasts from the U.S. and Europe.

"It's going to be the first time I see so many LEAFs driving around the city at the same time," said Yoshida en route to the event. "It'll feel a little like a homecoming event, and I'm excited about that."

At Nissan's GranDrive test course, located next to the Oppama plant where the LEAF is produced, EV experts took questions from owners on the car's technology, while a lucky few enjoyed a track spin in the race-edition Nismo LEAF RC.

Strong winds didn't dent the electric-enthusiasm as EV fans, shared experiences of zero-emission motoring and discussed plans for more events in the months ahead.

"I have seen a few events that started out with only a few hundred cars, but they always become much bigger in 10 or 20 years," said Yoshida.  "I hope this event will grow from here on."
