“Journey in Motion” Expresses Nissan’s Innovation, Celebrates Growth in China

In 2011, Dongfeng Nissan in China wanted something special to celebrate the growth of business and the opening of a new plant in Guangzhou.

The result is “Journey in Motion,” a fantastic sculpture featuring a Chinese-market Nissan Teana that has been “exploded,” or taken apart piece by piece and suspended from above.

“We wanted to express Dongfeng Nissan’s pursuit of innovation, our thoughts towards breaking conventions,” said Ren Yong, vice president Dongfeng Nissan. “We wanted to find a way to express and make an impact, so others can get a feel for Dongfeng Nissan’s strength.”

Paul Veroude is the Dutch artist who created the work. He is world famous for deconstructing and then reassembling cars and creating a brand new, exploded view of something that is, after he is done with it, completely new and visually engaging.

"It has been one of the most difficult challenges I have had," said Veroude. "I had only three months to create my concept for this sculpture, to deconstruct the car and to make it into what you see today.”

Veroude asked Nissan to give him the most popular car in China, a small compact car called the Teana, because he wanted Chinese viewers to have a connection with the art. To hang everything from the support structure, he had to build special hooks to secure the wires to each of the nearly 3,500 pieces. After removing all of the parts and putting them in a different order, the car became something completely different.

“It is even more spectacular than any of us could have imagined,” said Yong. “The project has been a real salute to an international collaboration of excellence: Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, English and German. It is a true meeting of art and technology in a very exciting and innovate way."
