VIDEO REPORT: Nissan Plant in Mexico Powered 50% by Renewable Energy

Nissan Plant in Mexico Powered 50% by Renewable Energy

AGUASCALIENTES, Mexico – Today, 50 percent of the energy used by the Nissan plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico, comes from renewable sources. This is the first manufacturing facility out of the entire Renault-Nissan Alliance to achieve this milestone.

In March, 2012, Nissan signed up with a company outside of Mexico City to purchase electricity generated from waste, or biogas. In this process, gas is produced from the breakdown of organic matter. It is a renewable energy source and can be used as fuel to make electricity. Nissan purchased some of that energy to account for 5 percent of what is needed to power the plant in Aguascalientes.

"It is a question of really being advocates of protecting the planet for the generations to come," said José Valls, president, Nissan Mexicana.

Nissan also partners with Enel Green Power to purchase electricity generated by wind, or eolic energy. About 45 percent of the plant's electricity comes from Enel, a company that has about 100 windmills in southern Mexico, in the city of Oaxaca.

Mexico is rich in natural resources like wind, sun, water, and rain, and the country is looking to renewable sources to help meet the country's growing demand for energy, expected to rise 4.5 percent annually.
