"Christmas from the Heart" - Nissan Canton Spreads Holiday Cheer Throughout the Community

CANTON, Miss. - Nissan Canton is bringing a little joy to the less fortunate this holiday season through its annual "Christmas from the Heart" community giving campaign.  As part of the campaign – originally started by a Nissan Canton employee – the company has organized several philanthropic activities this Christmas to help families in need enjoy the season.

Nissan Canton employees have once again organized a successful drive to collect new, unwrapped toys, gifts and non-perishable food items.  The drive has yielded more than 1,000 items so far, which will be distributed to children in need through several local community organizations including:

  • Baptist Children's Village
  • Canton Boys and Girls Club
  • Madison Countians Allied Against Poverty (MadCAAP)
  • Methodist Children's Home
  • Mississippi Children's Home Services
  • Rankin County Family & Children's Services
  • Salvation Army

"We are overwhelmed by the generosity of the Nissan family. These toys and gifts will make a difference for the children and families we serve. Despite uncertain economic times, it's heart-warming to know that so many people care about these children and are willing to sacrifice to make sure they receive gifts," said Becky Mercier, Coordinator of Donor Relations and Special Events, Mississippi Children's Home Services.

Additionally, the engineering and maintenance department conducted its own fund drive for the holidays, raising thousands of dollars for the Blair E. Batson Hospital For Children.   Nissan Canton is also working with the Salvation Army to once again sponsor a red kettle at a local store for a day. Employees of the plant have volunteered to take turns staffing the kettle and ringing the bell for one hour shifts throughout the day. This year, Nissan's "adopt-a-kettle" is at the Kroger grocery store in Madison.

And every year, a number of employees pool money and adopt local families to help during the holiday season with funds for food and gifts.  The company identifies families for adoption through local churches and community organizations.

"The holiday season is the perfect time of year to work together with our employees to help those in the community who are less fortunate," said Camille Young, Nissan Community Relations Manager.  "Our employees are incredibly generous and combined with company contributions, have given more than $7 million to worthy causes since the plant opened in 2003."
