The Nissan PlayStation® GT Academy again demonstrated the strength and depth of its driver discovery and development program this weekend when the four newest graduates took their prize drive at the Dubai 24 Hours.
Nissan and PlayStation® will demonstrate the growth in scale and stature of its innovative GT Academy virtual-to-real-racer competition in January. 2012's GT Academy Champions from Europe, USA, Germany and Russia will line up on the grid at the prestigious Dubai 24 Hour race (January 10-12, 2013) in two 370Z Nismo GT4 Race cars and in doing so they complete their transition from PlayStation's class-leading Gran Turismo®5 game to Nissan's Endurance Race Team in just four months.
An unemployed 29-year old mechanic from Plainfield, Ill., toppled 15 of North America's fastest virtual racers at the track to win Nissan GT Academy North America Season 2. Steve Doherty won a series of on- and off-track challenges designed to find out which of the top 16 Gran Turismo® virtual racers had what it takes to outdrive and outlast the others to earn a seat in a Nissan race car.
Gamers attempt to outrun a 500 horsepower chase car and avoid being hit by a hood-mounted paint ball rifle in a 'Cat and Mouse' challenge. Also, Gamers have to work together in teams for a Pit Stop challenge.
