Kozarov drives Nissan Altima to Touring Car win in opening weekend at COTA

AUSTIN, Tex. – Vesko Kozarov knows the Altima 3.5 inside and out as crew chief and principal car builder for CA Sport Team Nissan. On Sunday, it was his early race strategy and driving skills in the rain that took him to Victory Lane in Round three of the Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car race at Circuit of The Americas in Austin, Texas. It was the final race of the Nissan Grand Prix of Texas, and Kozarov and his team sent the race sponsors home with a win.

“I knew a good start was going to be important with the wet track,” said Kozarov, from Salt Lake City. “I knew I was going to need to get up front and try to open up a gap on the Porsche Caymans and Mustangs before the track dried out too much.”

He did just that, using the Altima’s VQ V-6 engine and superior wet weather grip of front wheel drive of his #3 Skullcandy Altima to the fullest over the first half of the 45-minute race to build a cushion that he would never relinquish on his way to the win.

“The guys did the hard work; I did the easy work,” said Kozarov. “It was wet.  It really goes to Nissan, Skullcandy, they did a great job putting the team together and they did all the hard work and I had all the fun.  I don’t know if I excel in wet weather, but I enjoy it.”

Newest CA Sport team member Jason Cherry of Gambrills, Maryland had a strong showing for the weekend, earning two fourth place finishes and a fifth place in the #13 Autism Society/Skullcandy Altima. Cherry hosted a large contingent from Austin’s Autism Society, along with Texas State Representative Ron Simmons, who saw Cherry display impressive pace and great patience in traffic around Austin’s challenging 3.4-mile road course all weekend.

“The last round was my first race with front wheel drive in the rain, so I was a little conservative trying to bring the car home without any damage,” said the 18-year old Cherry. “Overall, we scored good points and had a good experience this weekend at COTA.”

The next round of Pirelli World Challenge will be March 27-29 at the Firestone Gran Prix of St. Petersburg on the street circuit.
