Nissan’s popular Sentra enters the 1999 model year with updated front end styling – including a new headlight treatment, new grille and new front fascia – and the addition of a Limited Edition Option Package for Sentra GXE models. The Limited Edition GXE comes with a long list of features, including AM/FM/CD audio system, remote keyless entry system, 14-inch alloy wheels, sport-bucket seats, tachometer, front stabilizer bar and body-color mirrors, door handles and side moldings.

Other changes to the 1999 Sentra line include the addition of three new exterior colors: Charcoal Mist, Vivid Teal and Ruby Pearl. Sentra now comes in three trim levels: XE, GXE and SE.

In 1999, Sentra continues to offer consumers a well-balanced blend of affordability and efficiency without sacrificing style, quality or comfort. Designated a compact car by EPA classification, the unique qualities of Sentra, including roomy interior, smooth ride and responsive handling, make it operate and feel more like a mid-size sedan with compact pricing and fuel economy.

“The new GXE Limited Edition Option Package is a great way for consumers to add a luxury look and feel at a great value,” said Michael Seergy, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. “And, for buyers looking for an exceptional level of sportiness and performance with Sentra value, the Sentra SE continues to be the car of choice.”

Exterior Design
Sentra’s aerodynamic exterior design, with its high rear decklid, low hood line and steeply raked windshield helps it achieve a low 0.33 coefficient of drag (Cd). The design also provides enhanced visibility and easily accessible trunk space. Through use of the space-efficient rear Multi-Link Beam™ suspension, Sentra is able to offer more than 87 cubic feet of interior volume within a highly manageable 171.1-inch overall exterior length.

For 1999, Sentra is available in six exterior colors: Charcoal Mist, Ruby Pearl, Slate Blue, Super Black, Platinum Gold and Cloud White. Available interior colors include Gray and Charcoal.

Interior Design
The 5-passenger Sentra continues to offer many unique features not commonly found in other entry-level sedans, including excellent front and rear head room and leg room. Special attention was paid in the design of Sentra to reducing the intrusion of noise and vibration into the passenger compartment. Among the special steps taken in this area are use of a rigid body structure and large muffler.

Sentra also provides an unexpected level of comfort, ranging from the “low fatigue” front seat design, which provides compound support of the pelvis and lumbar arch, to the wide availability of convenience features ranging from power door locks and windows to dynamic audio systems.

Engine/Suspension
The 1999 Sentra is offered with two advanced powerplants, a responsive 1.6-liter 4-cylinder for XE and GXE and a potent 2.0-liter 4-cylinder for Sentra SE.

The 1.6-liter DOHC engine utilized in XE and GXE models delivers 115 horsepower and 108 ft-lbs of torque at 6,000 and 4,000 rpm, respectively. Mated to the easy-shifting 5-speed manual transmission, Sentra delivers an impressive 39 MPG highway and 29 MPG city (EPA estimates), and meets the California Air Resources Board’s stringent requirements for Low Emission Vehicles (LEV).

The 1.6-liter engine utilizes the Nissan Valve Timing Control System (NVTCS) to ensure optimum performance and fuel economy. Electronically controlled sensors measure throttle position and engine speed to activate the variable intake valve timing mechanism to meet demands on the engine. The NVTCS helps Sentra’s 1.6-liter engine provide better performance at lower engine speeds, without sacrificing high speed power output or fuel economy.

The sporty Sentra SE is powered by Nissan’s proven 2.0-liter 4-cylinder all-aluminum engine. This responsive powerplant produces 140 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 132 ft-lbs of torque at 4,800 rpm and has a high-revving 7,100 rpm redline. The dual overhead camshaft cylinder head allows easy breathing with a 4-valve-per-cylinder valvetrain. This combination of power and lightweight materials provides performance and responsiveness uncommon to this class of sedan.

Sentra’s excellent road manners come from a proven front independent MacPherson strut suspension combined with Nissan’s innovative rear Multi-Link Beam™ design. This advanced suspension provides more predictable handling and less road noise than traditional designs.

Sentra XE, GXE and SE are equipped with a standard rear stabilizer bar to improve handling, while the SE model adds a front stabilizer bar to match handling with its improved performance. A front stabilizer bar is standard with the GXE Limited Edition.

Stopping power for the SE model is provided by 4-wheel disc brakes (optionally available on ABS-equipped GXE models). XE and GXE models utilize a front disc/rear drum braking system. A 4-channel/4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is optionally available with GXE and SE models.

Steering is provided by an engine-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion system on XE, GXE and SE.

Safety

The 1999 Sentra features an extensive list of standard safety features including: dual front supplemental air bags, energy-absorbing steering column, child safety rear door locks, 3-point front and rear outboard seat belts, front seat belts with height-adjustable shoulder anchors, front and rear crumple zones and pipe-style steel side-door guard beams.
