Nissan Dominates in Mexico and Plans More Growth

MEXICO CITY – Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn recently visited Nissan Mexicana headquarters in Mexico City.  His visit was largely upbeat because Nissan is the largest automaker in Mexico.

"I have been very impressed by the performance we have in Mexico. We are the number one car maker with 24.9 percent market share, way above number two which is below 20 percent, and have a very profitable operation," said Mr. Ghosn.

During his time in Mexico, Nissan also celebrated the opening ceremony of the first public electric vehicle quick-charging station in Latin America. Mr. Ghosn headlined the event and was joined by Martha Delgado, Mexico City Environment Minister and Jordy Herrera Flores, the Federal Government's Minister of Energy.

Nissan officials say Mexico's market will grow not only domestically but also in exports. "I think the potential of Mexico is still much bigger than what it is today because our forecast is that the Mexican market will continue to progress on an average of five- to six-percent a year for the foreseeable future," said Mr. Ghosn.  "We're going to benefit now from the growth of the market." He also expects fiercer future competition which ultimately means more choice for Mexican consumers.

Speaking to reporters in Mexico City, Mr. Ghosn said "we will need capacity in North America and yes, there is a high probability that in the future we will be announcing a new plant in Mexico or in the United States."

Already, the company broke ground in July on a $2 billion factory in the central Mexican state of Aguascalientes, its third plant in the nation.
