Nissan Partners with NAACP During 50th Anniversary March on Washington Commemoration

Nashville, Tenn. – Nissan announced today that it will partner with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as part of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013. Nissan will honor the NAACP as they welcome an anticipated 150,000 march participants from across the country.

This weekend's events commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a seminal moment in American history where hundreds of thousands of citizens converged on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to speak out for civil rights and racial equality. The participants marched from the Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, where later that day Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspired the nation with his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

"Nissan and our 20,000 U.S. employees proudly support the NAACP and the 50th Anniversary March on Washington commemoration," said Rob Wilson, Nissan's director of Diversity and Inclusion. "This event is a celebration of diversity, community and inclusion. We live by these values every day at Nissan, and our success demonstrates what a talented and diverse workforce can accomplish."

Earlier this summer, Nissan sponsored events commemorating the life of Medgar Evers, an NAACP organizer who was assassinated at his home in Jackson, Miss., in 1963. The company also enjoys a close relationship with Myrlie Evers, civil rights leader and widow of Medgar, who recently visited Nissan's manufacturing facility in Canton.
