Nissan Shares Road Safety Insights at 2012 China Road Safety Forum

BEIJING, China – The sixth China Road Traffic Safety Forum, hosted by the China Automotive Technology & Research Center (CATARC), was held today in Beijing. With the strong support of Nissan (China) Investment Co., Ltd (NCIC), the forum attracted 150 participants, including government officials, corporate executives and experts and researchers from domestic and international universities and research institutes.

Under the theme “Enhancing Safety Awareness and Reducing Traffic Accidents”, participants presented their analyses on characteristics and causes of traffic accidents in China. They also shared the achievements of companies and research institutes in traffic safety management and vehicle safety technology, all aiming to enhance road safety across China.

Tetsuya Iijima, General Manager of IT & ITS Engineering Department of Nissan Electronics Engineering Development Division, delivered the keynote speech titled “Features and Countermeasures of Traffic Accidents in China”. Iijima provided a detailed analysis on the characteristics of traffic accidents in China based on findings from CIDAS, or the China In-Depth Accident Study, and introduced various advanced safety systems, including Nissan’s anti-collision technologies.

Nissan’s study shows that 73% of traffic accidents resulting in casualties were caused by collisions or when executing lane changes. The findings show that the primary cause of collisions was drivers being unaware of vehicles in front of them, and the main reasons for lane departure-related accidents were distraction and loss of vehicle control due to road conditions.

Under its safety technology concept named “Safety Shield”, Nissan strives to develop technologies which help protect people by proactively intervening to prevent accidents. Nissan has developed a number of innovative features in this area and at the forum, Distance Control Assist (DCA) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) were presented. DCA assists drivers when shifting from the accelerator to braking pedal, helping keep a distance from the front car and avoiding potential safety issues caused by fatigue, high speed or distraction. FCW monitors the distance between itself and the front car, and will alert the driver when the distance is dangerously close. At the same time, pre-braking will be applied automatically to avoid sudden braking. Nissan also showcased three advanced systems which will help prevent accidents while changing lanes, including Lane Departure Warning (LDW) to address the issue of distraction, and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) to address loss of vehicle control.

“Nissan is deeply committed to reducing the number of fatalities and serious injuries resulting from traffic-related accidents. Our goals is to halve the number of such incident by 2015, compared to 1995 figures,” said Iijima. “Nissan’s safety technologies allow drivers to take full control of the car with systems that provide appropriate information in a timely manner and respond quickly to the driver’s intentions. We believe that ultimately, these technologies will help minimize traffic accidents and related casualties. Our aim is to have a risk-free automobile society.”
